The founders
The Committee of Five, that became the International Committee of the Red Cross, brought together in the early 1860s five talented men:
- Henry Dunant, the visionary.
- Gustave Moynier, the organiser.
- Doctor Louis Appia, with experience of war surgery.
- Doctor Theodore Maunoir, also with experience of war surgery.
- General Henri Dufour, who had commanded Swiss troops.
