The founders

The Committee of Five, that became the International Committee of the Red Cross, brought together in the early 1860s five talented men:

  • Henry Dunant, the visionary.
  • Gustave Moynier, the organiser.
  • Doctor Louis Appia, with experience of war surgery.
  • Doctor Theodore Maunoir, also with experience of war surgery.
  • General Henri Dufour, who had commanded Swiss troops.
